Conveyor Systems and Cobots — The Perfect Combination for Production Process Automation

Conveyor systems are among the most common types of mechanical equipment, widely used across various industrial sectors for product transport and handling. Alongside their many advantages, such transport systems minimize human error, reduce workplace risks, and lower labor costs. Conveyors are particularly useful for moving bulky or heavy objects from one point to another, using various structural transport elements such as belts, rollers, or chains.

Robotec, a leading engineering company specializing in industrial automation and the official partner of Universal Robots in Bulgaria, offers innovative solutions by integrating collaborative robots with modular mk conveyor systems. Combining deep technical expertise with proven products, Robotec helps Bulgarian manufacturers automate their processes quickly, efficiently, and with a high return on investment.

The ability to choose between the universal, standardized, and modular conveyor systems of mk Group allows for customization whenever required by the application. These systems can be combined with rotary tables for product buffering and linear guides for precise, dynamic handling tasks. In recent years, the integration of conveyors and robots has led to much higher levels of automation across various packaging applications. The two components work hand in hand to deliver streamlined, efficient operation with greater precision and higher ROI.

Through its partnership with mk Group, Robotec offers not just equipment delivery, but complete engineering solutions — from process analysis and simulations to production cycle optimization and customized configurations.

Why Choose mk Group Conveyor Systems?

mk Group offers conveyor systems for virtually any product and operating environment.

The company’s rotary tables provide an optimal solution for maintaining continuous material flow. Transported products can be buffered, stored, distributed, or separated between process stages. On the other hand, mk’s linear motion solutions include sliding assemblies, support rollers, and linear guides with recirculating ball bearings that ensure precise and reliable linear movement, designed to meet specific customer requirements. As accessories to the conveyor systems, mk offers a wide range of drives, various support stand options, side rails, standardized and customized workpiece carriers, stoppers, control components, and more.

Advantages of mk conveyor systems include:

  • A large selection of standardized conveyor modules for optimal transport under diverse conditions;
  • Maximum process reliability thanks to advanced technology, high-quality materials, and globally available spare parts;
  • Modular construction for cost savings and short delivery times;
  • Decades of engineering expertise in designing and building custom conveyors beyond the standard product range;
  • Flexibility ensured by full compatibility with all mk structural components and modules.

SPU 2040 – Compact Conveyor System for the Tightest Spaces

One of mk’s latest conveyor systems is the SPU 2040 — an accumulation system with workpiece carrier recirculation, offering automated and cost-efficient processes for dynamic feeding, buffering, positioning, and separation, even in the most confined spaces.

With its robust design and a wide range of options, this system is suitable for a broad spectrum of automation and material flow applications.

The SPU 2040 enables asynchronous operation, meaning it works independently of the feed cycle, with automatic recirculation of workpiece carriers. Components placed on these carriers are transported on the upper conveying level via a flat-top chain. Once the component is removed, the empty carriers are safely returned underneath the conveyor and re-enter the transport line at the start. This eliminates the need for a second conveyor or complex lift-lower mechanisms — and there’s no need for manual or automatic carrier loading.

Key benefits of the SPU 2040 system:

  • Cost-effective and compact connection of two handling workstations;
  • Reliable and dynamic feeding, buffering, positioning, and separation;
  • Compact design with carrier recirculation below the transport level;
  • Buffer capacity compensates for different production cycles;
  • Conveyor system built from proven mk modules and various workpiece carriers for maximum flexibility;
  • Conveyor lengths from 2 to 10 m;
  • Speeds from 4 to 15 m/min;
  • Low maintenance and minimal wear.

Synchronizing with Cobots for Maximum Efficiency

Just as technology continues to enhance the capabilities of conveyor systems, robotics plays an equally important role. Smaller, more flexible collaborative robots (cobots) are designed to safely share workspace with humans. This opens up new automation opportunities in packaging, assembly, and other industries that traditionally relied on manual processes.

Since 2024, mk has been part of the Universal Robots partner network, offering belt conveyors that can be quickly and easily integrated into cobot applications through the URCap plugin.

The UR+ certified mk GUF-P 2000 belt conveyor is available in a suitable version for virtually any application. Conveyors come in widths from 50 to 800 mm and lengths up to 10,000 mm. They are designed for a maximum total load of 75 kg at speeds of up to 80 m/min. Since belt conveyors typically transport goods without special positioning or geometric support requirements, they are particularly suitable for machine vision processes.

With transport speeds of up to 80 m/min and load capacity up to 75 kg, the GUF-P 2000 conveyors are an ideal solution for moving boxes, containers, or irregular components in high-dynamic and flexible production environments.

The conveyor features a modular aluminum profile frame with T-slots on both sides, allowing easy system integration and attachment of side rails, sensors, and other accessories.

The mk conveyor system with the URCap plugin is a true plug-and-play solution, ensuring seamless communication between conveyors and cobots. It is compatible with all UR e-Series cobots. Installation is simple, and the intuitive interface enables control of up to two belt conveyors. Start/stop, direction, and speed commands can be managed via the plugin, or triggered by sensors or time intervals. The process structure remains fully customizable — even without programming knowledge.
